In keeping with the Magic 8-Ball, a childˇ¦s toy used to predict the future, the showˇ¦s artists playfully explore and reflect on their current place in the world, both in terms of childhood ideals and grown-up expectations. From shimmering fibreglass sculptures to digitally-inspired acrylic paintings, their works capture a sense of childlike wonder that is often humorous, sometimes whimsical and always magical.
All eight artists shown were born in the 1980s and hand-picked by 82 Republic from the Sichuan Fine Arts Institute in China. Sculptor LIU Jia and painters CHAN Yu, LI Li, WAN Yang, ZHOU Siwei, GUO Hongwei, MU Lei and LI Shurui, are still young enough to be in school but are already recognised as Chinaˇ¦s emerging art talents. Together, they represent a new generation of artists who have grown up in an environment of rapid development, strong economic growth and consumerism. They also belong to the first generation of Chinaˇ¦s single-child policy.
