Titled ˇ§CHINA: The NEW Generationˇ¨, this group exhibition will feature the same four Chinese artists, CHAN Yu, LI Li, WAN Yang and ZHOU Siwei, plus another 2 painters GUO Hongwei and Mu Lei, and a sculptor LIU Jia. All seven artists are from the Sichuan Fine Arts Institute and have barely been out of school when they are already recognised as Chinaˇ¦s emerging art talents. In fact, LIU Jia, the sculptor, is still undergoing his five-year undergraduate course in sculptural studies in Sichuan Fine Arts Institute but has already held a solo museum show with over 100 sculptures in France. LIU Jiaˇ¦s sculptures remind one of caricatures ˇV they are mostly amusing, funky and sometimes even sarcastic. On the other hand, the five paintersˇ¦ creations evolve around the theme of childhood toys and fantasies ˇV filled with childlikeness but also malice and destruction. Together, the six artists represent a new generation in China who grew up in an environment of rapid development, strong economic growth and consumerism. They also belong to the first generation of Chinaˇ¦s single-child policy.
